Redwork Christmas Tree Napkin Set

Supplies List

• Machine embroidery design
• Embroidery machine – 4x4 hoop
• Serger or sewing machine
• 1.5 yards-white or other solid cotton fabric (for embroidery)
• 1.5 yards-printed or other darker solid cotton fabric
• Cutting mat/rotary cutter/ruler
• Embroidery thread for embroidery
• Cotton thread for sewing
• Stick pins
• Scissors
• Tear away stabilizer
• Temporary spray adhesive
• Iron
• Marking pen

Step 1: Cut two 20 inch square pieces of the printed or darker cotton fabric. Step 2: Fold the fabric in half one way, then fold it again the other way to make a square.
Step 3: Cut the fabric (not on the folded edges). Cut in a circular shape as in the example. I used a 20 inch pizza pan to help get this shape. Step 4: Unfold the cut fabric and you should have a 20 inch circle in diameter.
Step 5: Repeat these steps with the white or solid cotton fabric. Cut two 20 inch squares and fold as you did before with the other fabric. Step 6: Use a circular item to cut the shape out with. Unfold the fabric and press with a hot iron.
Step 7: Picture of the finished cut circles. Step 8: Cut each circle in half.
Step 9: Do a test sample of the embroidery design so you know where you want to place the design on the napkin. This will be used as reference later. Step 10: Lay out the white piece of fabric and measure across the top 6 inches. Fold this fabric down to make a triangular shape. You will fold the fabric in an accordion style. Make sure that the edges are all even and press with an iron.
Step 11: Open the top of the tree napkin and place it over you embroidered sample to test if it fits and where you want it to be placed. Step 12: Now we know where we want the design to go. Hoop a piece of tear away stabilizer in the hoop. Place the folded tree napkin onto the hoop.
Step 13: Using a fabric maker or water ever pen you have, mark along the side of the napkin edge. Also mark where the tree edge stops so you know where to place it in the next step. Step 14: Marked stabilizer.
Step 15: Using a temporary spray adhesive, spray the back of the fabric to be embroidered or spray the tear away stabilizer. If you don’t want a sticky hoop, I recommend spraying the back of the fabric. Step 16: We will be sewing this project together with ¼ seam allowance. So take this into consideration when placing in the hoop. I was able to center the fabric in the hoop. Smooth into place.
Step 17: Embroider the design. When finished embroidering the design. Remove the fabric and stabilizer from the hoop and remove any excess stabilizer from the back of the fabric. Press with an iron. Step 18: Place the printed fabric right side up and place the white embroidered fabric on top of the printed fabric right sides facing each other. Pin along the edges.
Step 19: Sew along the edges using ¼ inch seam allowance. Leave an opening about 4 inches at the top for turning inside out. Step 20: Cut the corners off the fabric before turning it inside out . Do not cut the treads.
Step 21: Turn the fabric inside out. Step 22: Press with and iron. Make sure all the sewn edges are even.
Step 23: Sew along the edges using a narrow seam (up to 1/8 inch) all the way around the napkin. This will close up the opening and finish up the edge of the napkins. Step 24: With the light ironed marks from the accordion style fold, refold the napkin back into the shape of a tree. Press with a hot iron.
Step 25: Finished Christmas tree napkins. Make as many as you need for your table. Step 26: Finished open napkin.

Fast and fun!
